Don't Take What You Can Get, Take What You Want

By: Alyssa Uribe, SDSU Chapter Member

The other day, I heard a masters student say “don’t take what you can get, take what you want.” Pondering on it later, I realized how relevant this phrase is. It may seem like a no brainer, but it is easier said than done. There is no doubt each one of us work tirelessly to accomplish our goals. However, sometimes we hesitate or withhold our true feelings when we are given less than what we deserve. Whether we are skeptical about going after an opportunity or pursuing one we once neglected, we owe it to ourselves to be bold.

It’s not a bad thing to go after what you want. As young women, we are expected to stay quiet and accept what we are given. Advocating for ourselves is seen as us being problematic or aggressive, but we’ve worked hard to get where we are, and we should fight to get where we want to go! It should not be in our nature to concede when we are faced with a challenge. We are strong, intelligent, and confident women.

In the past, I’ve let opportunities slip by because I didn’t push myself to pursue it further. I settled and was left wondering, “what if?” Where would I be now if I had just gone after what I wanted? You never know where an opportunity may lead you, so take a chance on yourself. Take what you want and don’t settle for anything less.
