A Shopping Guide for Women in Science

By: Lindsey Allen, SDSU Chapter Member

Finals are coming to an end and the holidays are fast approaching. If you’ve procrastinated on shopping to focus on exams, trust me - you’re not the only one. But don’t stress! The Women in Science Society is here to help you find some unique gifts for all the nerdy ladies in your life. From academic prep tools to creative room decorations and fun gadgets, we know what exciting gifts are bound to be showstoppers this year.

If you’re looking for a practical gift, consider getting a portable coffee machine like this one. The compact device lets you home brew away from home which is perfect for the girl who is always on-the-go and in need of a caffeine fix. AND it doesn’t require a plug or outlet to work so she’ll never have to get up and lose her good spot at the library ever again.

If you want a gift to help her stay organized, try one of these unique subject notebooks. With stunning illustrations of every course she’s in, these will help her distinguish which notes go where and remind her how beautiful science can be at the same time.

On the other hand, if the girl you’re shopping for likes to organize everything online, this digital notepad will help her keep all her thoughts on one place. Take handwritten notes and upload them directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, or email with this device. It is completely paperless and reusable so she’ll never have to buy a notebook again.

When in doubt, candles are always a great gift. But if you want to make it specific to a woman in science, try getting her these adorable beaker candles to lighten up her room.

If you want your gift to fascinate a crowd, get a levitating planter like this one. People passing by will wonder how it stays afloat, but your scientist will know- it’s all in the physics.

If the scientist in your life appreciates nature but doesn’t have the time to maintain a regular planter, give her a self-sustaining terrarium like this one! No maintenance required means that she can focus on everything else while still being able to admire the beauty of a spermatophyte.

Gifts are always better when they include a clever pun like this one. This bowl set shows all that the proof really is in the pudding. At the bottom of each one of these pudding bowls is the mathematical proof to a different famous theorem. This is perfect if you want to get a good laugh out of your gift.

What many people don’t realize is how breathtaking different objects can be at the microscopic level. If you want to buy a gift for the microbiologist in your life, get them these decorative watercolor prints to frame. Who said scientists can’t be artsy?

Gift giving doesn’t have to be stressful this year. For more inspiration on gifts for science ladies, check out our Pinterest board here!
